5 years ago I moved to Melbourne to start my first ever job in the games industry at Blue Tongue Entertainment a THQ studio.
Complete noob that I was, I was expecting to start out as barrel monkey for the environment guys. You see the job description just said they were looking for a Junior 3D Artist and I was just so excited to actually get an interview I forgot to ask what it was I would actually be doing and truth be told I didn't care all that much. I wanted to work in the industry and figured painting geometric cylinders and boxes were better than nothing. At the very least it was a starting point. Imagine my surprise however, when on my first day, I was shown around the office, introduced to a whole bunch of awesomely talent people, and finally seated beside a tall lanky English Goth (with kick arse boots) and told "This is Wez, he's the lead character artist. You'll be working with him". 0_o I was now a character artist!!!
My crash course in video game production began, while I started making my first characters. I worked on 4 games during my time at Blue Tongue, 3 of which were published. Nicktoons Attack of the ToyBots! Followed by El Tigre, if you've heard of this one I'll be surprised. It was based on an animated show that got cancelled during its first season. It was fun to work on and a good little game considering the production time was cut from 8 months to something like 8 weeks. Then it was Marvel Super Hero Squad. It was also fun creating chibbi versions of some of my fav heroes and heroines. Then there was the unannounced HD title we were working on. Stupid NDA's
Sadly though, THQ has decided to withdraw its presence from Australia, closing Blue tongue permanently.
I learnt a lot during my time at Blue Tongue and grew immensely as an artist. Looking back at the work I've posted here in the past I almost cringe but I'm happy to see the growth I've made.
I'm Looking forward now to finding a new team of great artists to collaborate and grow with.
Get ready for a flood of past Blue Tongue work!!
